Born Giuseppe Carlo Bonanno on January 18, 1905, in Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily, Joseph Bonanno immigrated to the United States as a child. He rose through the ranks of the New York City Mafia and played a key role in the power struggle known as the "Castellammarese War" in the 1930s.

Formation of the Bonanno Crime Family
